Tesla fan receives EU approval for Cybertruck: Now experts are up in arms

The Tesla Cybertruck is causing fierce debates in Europe. As the online edition of the Guardian reports, a buyer in the Czech Republic has managed to register the controversial vehicle after some design changes.

Safety concerns about the angular design of the electric pickup are attracting the attention of several European safety organizations, including the European Road Safety Council and the European Cyclists' Association. They are calling for a ban on the Cybertruck on public roads.

Cybertruck approval in the Czech Republic: loophole or exception?

Especially in the Czech Republic, the protests came to a head after the owner Norton Slovak, whose company Cybertruck.cz owns the vehicle, received the registration.

He made several changes to the design to mitigate the security concerns. Among other things, he added rubber strips on the sharp corners of the vehicle. Nevertheless, the security experts criticize that the Cybertruck is still an "illegal risk to other road users". In a letter to the Czech Minister of Transport Martin Kupka, they demanded the immediate suspension of the registration.

Experts criticize the weight and design of the Cybertruck

The main criticism is directed against the weight and angular design of the Cybertruck. With a total weight of between 4,000 and 4,160 kilograms, the Cybertruck clearly exceeds the European limit for light commercial vehicles, which is 3.5 tons. The critics accuse the authorities that the registration of the vehicle was made possible by a legal loophole.

In addition, opponents fear that the angular design of the vehicle could significantly increase the severity of injuries in accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists. The sharp edges and corners of the Cybertruck could cause serious injuries in the event of an impact, the security associations argue. Although any collision between a vehicle and an unprotected road user can lead to injuries, the Cybertruck is a special risk due to its unique design.

Smaller Cybertruck version planned for the EU market

Since its market launch in the USA, the Tesla Cybertruck has repeatedly been the subject of criticism. As EFAHRER.com already reported, the angular design has already led to injuries several times.

Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already hinted that the company could develop an adapted, more compact version of the Cybertruck for international markets. It could be more in line with European regulations. Whether and when such a model will be launched on the market, however, remains open. The approval of the Cybertruck in Europe is therefore far from being decided.
